Memoirs of a Foodie

Being located so close to my workplace this is the cafe of choice on the days some co-workers and I want to have lunch before we start clocking in the late hours. It's nestled in the middle of Norwest Business Park so its strategic location means getting a coffee fix won't be a problem before heading into work.

    Green tea latte $4.20/$4.90
A very likeable green tea latte, no doubt that I would have preferred the green tea flavour to be more intense but this was acceptable, not too sweet and not too thin in consistency either.

Pulled pork roll with fries $14
Let me start off with the fries which Piccolo Me does extremely well. They're reminiscent of the classic McDonald's fries in that they're thin and crispy and then brought to a whole new level with what Piccolo Me call "Super Seasoning". The seasoning was salty with a little kick of spiciness to make the fries even more addictive than they already were but in saying that nothing beats the Red Lea chips from Cabramatta.

As for the pulled pork roll, I was really impressed with the pulled pork itself which was extremely flavoursome, sweet but more salty and the smoked garlic and paprika aioli was fantastic. However, the rocket completely overwhelmed everything with its bitterness despite how chock full of flavour the pulled pork was.

    The Piccologato $7.50
This is how I get my caffeine hit before work, in the form of an affogato. Two scoops of hazelnut chocolate vanilla ice cream, a double ristretto, and chocolate flakes and crushed hazelnuts to garnish.  It was good at first but eventually I found the ice cream much too sweet that even the ristretto wasn't enough to balance it out.

    Cheese burger with fries $14
An average burger that could have been improved if the patty wasn't completely cooked through. I did have a different beef burger on my next visit (The Roymeo) and the patty was much better, it was less dry and a little pink in the middle so there must be some inconsistencies to be sorted out. Overall, a no-fuss burger and I especially liked that there was bacon in it and that the cheese was melted.

    Nutella fried ice cream $10
The first time coming to Piccolo Me they didn't have the fried ice cream available so on the second visit (two weeks later) they did and my co-workers and I were super stoked to finally try it. It was larger than I had anticipated so after shovelling down a burger for lunch this was difficult to finish.

The batter was quite thick and crumbly in texture which I enjoyed as it was much like eating a hollow sphere of delicious cookie crumbs. There was even a side of Maltesers for added decadence.

The Nutella ice cream couldn't withstand the heat from being deep-fried so cutting it in half revealed a melted mess. The dessert could definitely be improved upon if they could combat that issue as eating half-melted ice cream wasn't particularly great but I did like the combination of the thick, semi-crunchy batter with the Nutella ice cream.

Piccolo Me is open from Monday to Friday and they have a decent selection of breakfast and lunch options. Overall I found the food average and I did like the dessert concepts available but they could be better.

With the exponential influx of burger places in Sydney the growing competition means better and bigger burgers for all to enjoy so when I heard PLK and Barrio Chinowere joining forces there was no way DT and I were going to miss out. Considering it's only a pop-up, taking up residency at Deus Cafe in Camperdown it isn't going to be around forever; until the end of January but I really hope it's extended or becomes a permanent addition. Honestly, I had only known of PLK's existence and from previous experience, the burgers were pretty fine. Barrio Chino was a new name to me but if PLK was involved that was enough reassurance for me that the burgers would be worth my while and money.

    Menu
We visited on a Sunday with the knowledge that it opened at 12pm, so we being the people who didn't want to wait in a long queue for our burger fix arrived at 12 on the dot. To our surprise, the place was already in full swing, if we had known that we would have ventured inside sooner as we were just passing time in the car waiting for 12 'o clock to roll around. Good thing the line wasn't too long yet because I was starving.

The cafe was nicer than I had presumed with long communal tables and also smaller ones to accommodate at most four people. Ordering was straightforward, you order and pay at the counter, receive a number and find a table and the food will be brought out to you. It was an efficient, no-fuss system although there was about a 20 minute wait for the food to arrive, but totally worth it.

    Double cheese burger $16
Trust me when I say that the burger was not all just good looks. Definitely a burger worth coming back for and will make sure to throw in some bacon next time. So glad we got the double because the beef patty was so close to perfect, let down a tiny bit from not being more seasoned, but that's probably intentional so one can savour them beefy flavours. Make sure when you order their cheeseburger to specify you want the patty cooked medium otherwise it would be served burnt (well done) and why would you want a burnt one?

The patties were soft with perfectly pink insides and draped with a layer of American cheese it was absolutely mouthwatering, especially so for DT because he loves his burgers. As for the milk buns, they were robust and did a good job holding those epic layers together and were soft and fluffy. The lettuce, tomato and McClure's pickles helped to balance out the heaviness of it all while the dirty sauce (a mixture of cheese sauce and spicy aioli) really gave the burger that necessary flavour and oomph to make the entire creation so amazingly good.

    Fried chicken burger $14
I couldn't help but compare it to Mary's fried chicken burger which I rank very highly. Unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations but in saying that it was still a very good burger. I was most impressed by the buttermilk fried chicken because it was so succulent and tender and was similar to Mary's except for flavour. There was green Sriracha mayo in there somewhere but I couldn't taste it which was a shame. I also felt that the lettuce was too intrusive (probably because I got lettuce closer to the stalk which was too hard and crunchy) and would have enjoyed it more if the burger came without it.

French fries with dirty sauce $7
One cannot have burgers without their ultimate companion and these french fries were badass with that smothering of dirty sauce on top. The fries were nice and crisp on the outside while soft and potatoey inside. The cheese sauce and spicy aioli combination was right up DT's alley and I was afraid it would be too much for me to handle but I was wrong. Cheese sauce it was but there was enough spiciness to counteract the heaviness which made it super addictive and hence neither of us displayed any restraint when it came to eating them.

Sadly, this burger pop-up will be finishing up soon and it's not one to be missed as PLK and Barrio Chino have collaborated to produce some pretty awesome burgers, particularly their cheeseburger and that dirty sauce is freakishly delicious too. If you get the fries, you need the dirty sauce to complete them.

A dreary, rain-filled Saturday night warranted a visit to the recently opened Chefs Gallery at Little Saigon Plaza in Bankstown. While it was significantly smaller than the CBD branch, there was sufficient seating available but if you want to avoid waiting at all for a table I recommend heading in for an early dinner from 5pm.  DT and I arrived at 5:30pm and it was quite empty save for two occupied tables. Not sure what the crowds would be like at lunch time but I would suspect it to be similar.

    Spacious and modern
Even if you were required to wait for a table there was a very generously furnished waiting area unlike its CBD location where a throng of people waiting outside on the street would be a common sight.

    The kitchen
The busy and bustling kitchen can be observed through stylish cubic glass panels.

We spent a fair bit of time perusing the menu as there was an array of dishes to choose from, admittedly the prices were quite expensive which had an impact on our choices. One dish we were adamant to order from the get go was the Macanese style mini burgers which looked and sounded oh-so-delish.

Service was really prompt but it was important to note that the restaurant was pretty much empty at the time. Food was paced well with most of it brought out together. Dessert, if ordered, can be asked for after finishing mains.

Macanese style mini burgers with pork fillet, pork floss, lettuce and a sweet chilli mayo dressing $16.90
DT and I agreed that this was the best savoury dish out of the ones we ordered. It ticked the boxes for presentation and taste. Deep fried golden milk buns cleverly replaced your conventional burger buns and I would gladly have them any day as they made these sliders super crunchy and flavoursome one-handed affairs. On a side note, let's just forget that they were deep-fried calorific buns. Gotta indulge on the weekend am I right?

The ratio of each component was perfect, a slab of tasty pork fillet, a small handful of shredded lettuce, garnishing of salty and sweet pork floss and a dousing of sweet chilli mayo worked their magic to produce a seriously scrumptious (but mini) burger fusion.

Chinese roti with cheese and mushrooms $12.90
Cheese and roti, not a bad combination at all. Fluffy pastry it was but lacked the delicate and flakey layers characteristic of my all-time favourite Malaysian snack, roti canai. The melted cheese made it more dense and slightly chewy in texture but it enhanced the pastry with its aromatic cheesiness which I enjoyed along with the thin slivers of juicy button mushrooms hidden away in the warm golden pockets of pastry.

Battered king prawns with wasabi mayonnaise and flying fish roe $24.90
The king prawns had a good bite to them, firm and plump and didn't have that off-putting prawn odour I was expecting so that was a relief. The batter itself was light and crisp with minimal oiliness and had a subdued saltiness which complemented the wasabi mayonnaise. The mayo in itself was quite rich and had a strong wasabi kick where the sting of its vapours would come about most unexpectedly and be strangely satisfying at the same time once the sensation subsided.

Coffee and caramelised pork chops served with a selection of green tea biscuits $22.90
The pork chops were larger than expected, well-seasoned and pan-seared to achieve a flavoursome and caramelised surface. If you're not watching carb intake then get a bowl of steamed rice to go with it. I didn't particularly fancy the thick coffee gravy on the side as it was more bitter than savoury, it wasn't a bad pairing with the pork chops but neither was it necessary.

I was perplexed by the green tea biscuits but instead of questioning their co-existence with the pork chops I munched on them carefully, alternating with bites of pork. I would still prefer to have my biscuits with say a warm cup of tea or coffee and not so much a piece of meat but they didn't go terribly together. The biscuits alone were actually really decent, they were of a crumbly shortbread consistency with an obvious hint of green tea flavour and not excessively sweet and that was the reason why the odd combination worked because there wasn't a huge contrast in flavour. I suppose the intended way of eating the dish would be eating the pork chops first and then polishing it off with the green tea biscuits. I did leave the green tea egg roll until last and it was indeed pleasant to finish the dish off on a sweeter note.

I didn't notice it at the time of dining but there should have been another biscuit included which was absent. That's pretty disappointing on their part especially when taking into account the relatively exorbitant prices.

Egg yolk custard bun $4.90 each (minimum order of 2)
Couldn't go past a duo of these vibrantly eccentric character buns after scrolling past @asianfoodninja's video of them. I'm positively certain it is based off of the Japanese Sanrio character Gudetama. It was more peculiar than cute in appearance and very amusing given that these custard buns were deliberately designed to be played with.

    Spewing its yolky contents
The novelty of squishing the little bun was too tempting to resist especially since you'll be entertained by it sticking out its tongue in the form of a delectable egg yolk custard. Fun and playfulness factor aside, the steamed bun itself was soft and fluffy, slightly sweetened and contained a sweet, smooth salted egg yolk custard that was still warm and gooey which made it all the more yummy. The buns were prepared to order so we did end up waiting roughly 15 minutes for them to come out but would rather them freshly made than pre-made and re-heated so it was not a big deal.

Wouldn't mind having another bun and squeezing out the molten lava-like custard, absolutely a crowd-pleaser and should be tried at least once. DT and I actually enjoyed it more than their cuter endearing piggy bun sibling; the oozy gooey custard just worked better over the black sesame filling.

Chefs Gallery new location in Bankstown means this popular restaurant chain is now more accessible to me and I would visit again to try more dishes from their comprehensive range. So far, their food has been average overall, with some standouts such as the mini burgers and their charming custard bun. You would be spending extra dough on quintessentially Chinese dishes with a creative twist and in terms of value for money, it wasn't really there. That doesn't prevent it from being a "sometimes" place though because when you're feeling like something a little different and relatively classier than typical Chinese cuisine then Chefs Gallery fits the bill.

Pub Life Kitchen has been around for some time and DT and I made a visit here back in March this year so this is a long overdue review. They may have tweaked their burgers since then so my experience may or may not reflect what is currently being served now.

The burger joint can be found at The Lord Wolseley Hotel in Ultimo, it was a bit out of the way of the heart of the CBD and we had to rely on Google Maps to locate it.

Hot n Sticky chicken wings $10
Pub Life Kitchen's focus is on delivering killer burgers and while their burgers were really good these saucy wings stole the show for me. Sticky would be the perfect word to describe them especially since we went at them with our bare hands so it got considerably messy. We would have appreciated some cutlery as our fingers were insanely sticky from the sauce but it was also finger-looking good. The sauce was mostly sweet but not sickening in any sense because of the mild spicy kick that was apparent with each bite. For $10 we were given a decent amount of wings and they were adequately bathed or should I say practically swimming in a pool of the addictive sauce.

    The O.G. $18
The O.G. comprised of a 200g house ground beef patty, Monterey Jack cheese, caramelised onion, tomato, iceberg lettuce and roast garlic and lime aioli. The beef patty was cooked medium rare so it was tender and had a juicy pink centre and was topped off with a mandatory slice of melted Jack cheese. The roast garlic and lime aioli was the ideal condiment while the sesame buns were soft and fluffy and managed to hold everything in place. I felt that it could have done without the obstructive piece of lettuce as not only did it detract from the flavour but also the appearance. Regardless, DT said it was a delicious burger, comparable to Mary's and would have no qualms about getting it again.

    The Bird $18
I was immediately drawn to it because I love me some chicken and with the inclusion of Dorito chips  in the batter it was the obvious choice for me. Having already tried Mary's chicken burger my expectations were high and was hoping for something similar if not better. It was heftily sized and the amount of fried chicken squashed between those lightly toasted buns was astounding, absolutely no objections there. My teeth sunk through the soft buns and proceeded to make contact with amazing crunchiness that was the Dorito fried chicken. While they were succulent pieces of chicken it wasn't quite on par with Mary's version which was more flavoursome and admittedly more greasy but also the reason why they were so good. Don't be swayed against it though as it was still a great burger, I just prefer Mary's and I respect that some don't because of how oily that chicken burger is so 'The Bird' might be more up your alley especially since the greasiness is balanced out with the sweet coleslaw.

The burgers were fairly pricey but they did come served with a large portion of fries. They reminded me of the fries at Macca's, more soft than crispy and quickly disappeared as fries and burgers go hand-in-hand.

Pub Life Kitchen dish out some great burgers and they would be worth your while to try. On Wednesday nights, they do experimental burgers so if you're lucky to be free in the city at that time and feeling peckish give them a shot.

It was a warm Sunday afternoon and DT and I didn't want to travel too far so Buttermelt Cafe located in the heart of Strathfield was the pick for that day. The cafe took up the space where Moochi was once upon a time so it was a pretty small hangout but there were plenty of empty tables so waiting for one was a non-issue. Judging from the abundance of Instagram pictures of their monster of a pancake stack it would be fair to assume that it was their most popular item on the menu and the main reason I wanted to hit the place up.

    Small and cosy interior
The yellow accents made the cafe pop and the star decorations were quite cute but it all seemed a bit random and mismatched. Let's not focus on that though and instead on the food and drink.

    Food and drink menu
The menu was easy to peruse, with the food and drink selections all squeezed onto the one page. For beverages, DT and I ordered a taro latte and green tea latte respectively.

Green tea latte and taro latte $4
With one sip of the green tea latte I was instantly met with the delicate aroma of matcha, the froth was silky and the latte smooth and creamy and was sweetened but not dramatically so where the green tea flavour was masked. It wasn't up there with the matcha latte served at Cre Asion which was unbelievably rich and smooth but it still got my tick of approval and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

The taro latte was also really lovely as the taro flavour didn't taste artificial at all. It wasn't heavily sweetened either which allowed the taro flavour to really come through and be appreciated. Taro is also a rather unique flavour to have in a hot beverage so it was great to see it executed quite well. DT definitely enjoyed it and preferred it over its green tea counterpart.

    Pulled pork burger $15
DT was presented with a fairly sizeable burger that was seriously heaped with a mound of slow-cooked pulled pork, diced onions, quartered cucumbers and pickles. Together they made a statement on top of a radicchio leaf which served to provide some textural crunch and prevented the bread from becoming soggy from the juicy pulled pork. The brioche roll encompassing the said components wasn't like any brioche that I had come across as it had corn kernels baked inside of it and brought about a subtle sweetness which I really liked.

In terms of tastiness, it was better than average, the pulled pork was flavoursome and dripping with juices which did cause a bit of struggle during its consumption. It was slightly sweet and more savoury but was letdown a smidge by not being tender enough. The sourness from the pickles, bitterness from the radicchio and the onions were great for packing in different flavours and worked harmoniously to produce a sensible burger. The brioche was especially excellent as it was toasted until it was amazingly crunchy and the discovery of the bits of corn throughout made it less ordinary.

Oh my, I almost forgot about the chips which were described as butter chips on the menu. I wished there were more of them because they were incredibly crunchy and light in texture while still being soft and potatoey inside.

    Buttermelt pancakes $15.50
The pancakes along with their brioche French toast make up their signature section on the menu and are served all day which is fortunate as I could surely have these pancakes anytime of the day or night. It was so visually stunning that I had severe happy feels when it was brought to the table. The pancakes were stacked in a reasonable fashion with generous slathers of berry compote alternated through and plenty of coarsely ground pistachio sprinkled around to add a pop of colour and crunchy nuttiness.

    Top view
This was life-changing and needs to be personally experienced as I'm unable to do it any justice by describing it with mere words. Just know that the pancakes themselves were cooked to have a crisp exterior and the innards were nothing but soft and sweetened clouds of fluffiness. The blueberry and raspberry compote was beautiful and delivered sweet and tart bursts of flavour to assault my tastebuds while the delicious scoop of creamy vanilla bean ice cream exemplified the epicness that was these buttermelt pancakes. I need more of this in my life but I don't want diabetes, life is hard.

If you haven't been to Buttermelt Cafe, do make a trip there as the pancakes were to die for. It was considerably better than the ones I've had from Pancakes on the Rocks. The pulled pork burger was also pretty decent if you're not keen on raising glucose levels with all that sugar. For something warm to drink, their taro and green tea latte were worth having, especially the taro as it's not commonly done. I will definitely need to go back try their other savoury offerings and the brioche French toast. I also wouldn't mind having those fabulous pancakes again.

XS Espresso is a small cafe situated in a large outdoor complex called Greenway Plaza in Wetherill Park. It seemed a little out of place among the less vibrant eateries there and would fit right in at Surry Hills or Alexandria where all these sorts of cafes tend to frequent. It's great to have trendy cafes be accessible locally though and I for one am all for it. There's also sufficient parking available so you won't have to resort to parking on the street which is a relief.

It seemed all the locals have heard of this place as it was brimming with people and we had to wait roughly 15 minutes for a table. The cafe could have done with more waitstaff so people could have been seated more efficiently.

    Pretty green decor
I really liked the ambience created with the green pot plants against the brick walls which brought about a rustic and hipster feel. The green hues were also relaxing to the eyes and those hanging light bulbs really spruced up and brightened up the cafe.

    Breakfast menu
As DT and I had just come out from a morning of swimming, I was quite famished, so I ordered the 'Big XS Breakfast'. I have seen photos on Instagram of the 'Acai Bowl' and it certainly looks very pretty however, I am not quite at the stage where I will order healthier dishes, although perhaps I should give them a try and end up feeling less guilty about overindulging on the weekends.

    Lunch menu
DT went with the 'XS Chicken Burger'.

    Drinks menu
    Dessert menu
I'm always tempted by desserts and XS Espresso has quite a generous selection, from churros, to waffles, crepes and pancakes. I will definitely have to come back to try them and what a relief that they serve their desserts until 10pm. The scrolls on display in their glass cabinets were also very enticing but I had to use all my willpower to decide against them because I was ordering their epic milkshakes, two of them at that.

Left: Tim Tam & Natural Peanut Butter $7 Right: The Volcano $14
You might notice that 'The Volcano' isn't listed on their drinks menu and will observe many people around you with awesome looking concoctions that you can't pinpoint on the menu. The Volcano was one of these "off-the-menu" drinks and hence was something I had to ask for at the counter.

Tim Tam & Natural Peanut Butter $7
The Tim Tam and peanut butter milkshake was definitely the favourite of the two. They went super heavy with the whipped cream and it arrived with two peanut butter Tim Tams. Win. The milkshake itself was heavenly, it was really thick in consistency and chock full of peanut butter and chocolate flavour. One of the only milkshakes I have ever had that I thought was worth the price.

    The Volcano $14
The Volcano wasn't as amazing, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. The milkshake had the same consistency but because it was chocolate-flavoured it wasn't as exciting as the peanut butter one and was a little plain in comparison. The volcano cake on the other hand was incredible. It was so rich and moist with a chocolate centre that was so delectably gooey. It was without a doubt, the icing on top. It was pricey though, costing a hefty $14, and I was quite shocked when I saw the charge on the receipt but I think the volcano cake itself was almost worth it.

These super shakes are not good if you're watching out for your waistline (I don't even want to comprehend the sheer amount of calories in these beasts) but if you want a guilty sweet treat then by all means order their milkshakes because you won't leave disappointed.

    XS Chicken Burger $15.00
The grilled chicken had a lovely smokey charred flavour to it that wasn't overly done however I did find the chicken a little on the overcooked side of things because it was slightly dry in the middle. There was also a bit too much rocket for my taste making it a tad too bitter but their delicious tangy house-made Peri-Peri sauce helped to counteract that somewhat. The deep-fried potato chips were crunchy, not surprisingly, and served their purpose as a carbolicious side.

    Big XS Breakfast $18
Having had the 'Big Breakfast' from Trio in Bondi Beach which lived up to its name, the 'Big XS Breakfast' was not as impressive. It paled in size and while I was full from the meal I wasn't stuffed which was subsequently a good thing for my stomach. You can have the eggs poached, scrambled or fried and being a poached egg kind of girl that's how I ordered them. It came with two slices of toasted sourdough bread, bacon, baby truss tomato, avocado mash, spinach and sautéed mushrooms. It was an ordinary assortment of breakfast foods, the spinach and mushrooms were juicy and seasoned well while the bacon was crispy and savoury. The avocado mash was mellow in flavour which balanced out the saltiness of the other components.

    Obligatory yolk shot
The yolk wasn't as a runny as I had hoped but it wasn't unacceptable by any means and made for a nice gooey spread on the sourdough.

XS Espresso is a solid cafe in South West Sydney that excels at epic milkshakes. They are seriously worth trying as so far I consider them the best. Their food items aren't bad either and you've got to love that they have a dessert bar going on at night time for that sugar hit.
